CORD (Canonical Object Relational Data) connects artificial intelligence outputs to business systems by wrapping every AI-generated object in a canonical envelope that travels with the data. The envelope carries a schema version, a fidelity score, and an audit trail of every system the object has passed through. Business systems that implement CORD can validate the shape, detect degradation, and alert when an AI output has lost fidelity in transit. The result is that AI value reaches the business intact, not as a rumor.
The most common failure mode in AI deployments is that the model produces value and the business system silently discards it. CORD exists to close that gap.
What Does the CORD Envelope Contain?
Three things, every time.
A schema reference. A pointer to the canonical shape this object is supposed to conform to. Any consumer can fetch the schema and validate the object against it.
A fidelity score. A number representing the percentage of the original object that survived intact through every system the object passed through. Starts at 100. Decreases at each hop that drops or coerces data.
An audit trail. A short log of every system that touched the object, in order, with the fidelity score at each point. If something was lost at hop three, the audit trail tells you exactly where.
How Does an AI Output Travel Through CORD?
Walk through a typical path.
Step one. The AI model produces a structured output. The output is wrapped in a CORD envelope. Schema is referenced. Fidelity is 100. Audit trail has one entry.
Step two. The wrapped object hits the first integration. The integration reads the schema, validates the object, passes it along. If the integration had to drop or coerce anything, it updates the fidelity score and adds an entry to the audit trail.
Step three. The object reaches the next system. Same process. Validation, optional degradation, updated envelope.
Step four. The object reaches the final consumer. The consumer can read the envelope to know what shape to expect and how much of the original survived. If fidelity is below threshold, alert. If schema does not match, alert. If audit trail shows unexpected systems, alert.
None of this is magic. It is just a defined protocol for moving structured data with integrity intact.
What Is the Envelope Fidelity Score?
A number from 0 to 100. Represents the share of the original object that has survived in shape and content. Perfect transmission is 100. A degraded object might arrive at 73, meaning roughly a quarter of its information was lost or coerced.
The score is computed by the systems the object passes through. Each system reports what it had to do. The cumulative effect is the score at the final destination.
Once you have a fidelity score, you can do something with it. Set thresholds. Block low-fidelity data from reaching critical systems. Alert when the score drops below baseline. Prove to leadership that AI is not the problem, the data layer is.
What Happens Without CORD?
What happens is what is happening today at most companies. AI produces clean output. The output passes through three integrations. Each one drops a couple of fields. The final consumer receives a thin version of the original. Nobody knows how much was lost because nobody was tracking.
This is the silent tax. I have written about it in What Is Structured Data Loss. CORD is the standard that makes the tax visible and recoverable.
How Do You Implement CORD?
Three steps.
One. Define the schemas. What shapes does your AI produce. Pick the top three or four object types. Write the schemas. Version them.
Two. Wrap outputs. Every AI output gets a CORD envelope at the point of generation. This is usually a few lines of code in the model wrapper or orchestration layer.
Three. Make consumers CORD-aware. The business systems that consume AI output need to read the envelope. At minimum: check schema, check fidelity score, log the audit trail. At maximum: validate strictly and alert on degradation.
You do not need to do all of this on day one. Start with wrapping outputs and logging fidelity. Even that alone tells you where the data layer is leaking.

Final Thought
AI does not lose value in the model. It loses value in transit. CORD is how you make the transit accountable. Without it, every AI deployment is operating on faith. With it, you can prove what survived and fix what did not.
